Most Anticipated Movies of 2025

Steven Soderbergh has built a reputation for tackling numerous genres, including heist films and medical thrillers. This movie presents a haunted-house story told from the ghost’s point of view, featuring Lucy Liu and Julia Fox as two individuals who relocate to a house without realizing it already has an unseen occupant. Soderbergh’s distinct style usually involves tight editing and clever storytelling devices. Here, he adds supernatural tension and the growing psychological anxiety that comes with ghosts refusing to rest. Viewers can expect his characteristic suspenseful pacing as he navigates a new, chilling creative space. Edgar Wright brings us a new adaptation of the Stephen King sci-fi novel, which first made it onto the big screen in the form of an Arnold Schwarzenegger action extravaganza in 1987.

If Whannell can bring the same kind of flair that made The Invisible Man a runaway success, we can expect good things. Micheal Gracey, director of The Greatest Showman, takes the reins in a biopic about UK musician Robbie Williams. The film is an original musical based on the life and career experiences of Williams, exploring his ascent to stardom from his boy-band beginnings to unprecedented success as a solo artist. He’s portrayed as a chimpanzee, voiced and played in performance capture by Jonno Davies. Charlie Cox is therefore reprising his role though under Disney+ this time, but the plot is not expected to obsessively follow that of the Daredevil series.

Before then, Rothkopf spent 16 years at Time Out New York, where he was film editor and senior film critic. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Sight and Sound, Empire, Rolling Stone and In These Times, where he was chief film critic from 1999 to 2003. Ashley Lee is a reporter at the Los Angeles Times, where she writes about theater, movies, television and the bustling intersection of the stage and the screen. In this time travel romance, Robbie stars alongside Collin Farrell in a story about two strangers who meet at a wedding and end up on an impromptu road-trip adventure guided by a not-quite-so-normal GPS system. Directed by musical maestro Questlove, this documentary examines the life and legacy of the legendary funk band Sly & The Family Stone.

From big action flicks to touching dramas and fun animations, there’s something for everyone to get excited about. Ryan Coogler, recognized for directing Creed and Black Panther, delves into darker territory with Sinners. Michael B. Jordan takes on dual roles as twin brothers who come back to their hometown, hoping for a fresh start. Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku costar, playing movie guide characters who soon find themselves caught in an ominous conflict linked to local secrets.

That’s a vote of confidence with only a minute’s worth of footage available. The horror genre is off to a hot start in 2025 thanks to buzzy standouts like Companion, The Monkey, and Heart Eyes. An AI lovebot thriller, a murder-happy plaything, and a Valentine’s Day slasher are stealing (and stabbing) hearts — you love to see it. But it’s only April, and we still have plenty more horror releases to come. Sam Wilson, the superhero formerly known as The Falcon, took on Cap’s mantle in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and now he’s ready for the big screen.

Finney must rely on their guidance to outsmart his captor and escape before becoming the next victim. The Black Phone 2 is the ninth feature collaboration between Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum, who is producing the film, and Hawke. We don’t know much about the plot of this film, but we do know that it’s directed by Peter Atencio (Keanu, The Machine) and it’s a live-action/animated hybrid starring the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Momoa, among others. There are also presumably going to be animated animals involved, but we don’t yet know who will appear as themselves in the film, and who will be voicing animated characters. Considering The Bad Guys (2022) saw huge commercial success at the box office and on streaming, it’s no surprise that Dreamworks and Universal are doing a sequel. This time around, the Bad Guys grapple with crime-free life as Good Guys when they are confronted by an all-female squad of criminals who prompt them out of retirement for a final hurrah.

Christopher Abbott plays a rural husband who becomes infected by a mysterious creature, while Julia Garner and Matilda Firth round out the isolated family desperately trying to handle his increasingly alarming changes. The film pays homage to the 1941 original, mixing modern horror techniques with traditional creature-feature elements. Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro finally gets to bring his long-gestating passion project to the big screen.

Coming Out May 6, 2025

Dean Fleischer Camp, credited with Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, tackles a live-action version of Disney’s 2002 tale about an alien “dog” and his Hawaiian friend. Chris Sanders is rumored to reprise his voice as Stitch, while Billy Magnussen and Zach Galifianakis embody alien forces who want to recapture the mischievous experiment. Expect the same humor and heartfelt exploration of family that defined the original, updated for modern audiences. Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho, who won an Oscar for Parasite (2019 film), offers a sci-fi narrative starring Robert Pattinson as Mickey, a “disposable” member of a crew colonizing the frozen planet Niflheim. Whenever someone dies on a mission, a new clone is activated, retaining the prior individual’s memories.

Set in 1930s Jim Crow-era Louisiana, the show follows twin brothers who, in an effort to leave their troubles behind, return to their hometown only to learn that a “greater evil” is waiting for them upon their arrival. This psychological thriller directed by Drew Hancock stars scream-queen-in-training Sophie Thatcher of Yellowjackets fame. After visiting a billionaire’s remote estate in the woods in the wake of his untimely passing, a group of friends experiences a chain of grisly events set in motion by his death. Book and producing empire aside, we still love Reese Witherspoon most when she’s starring in a perfect rom-com. In You’re Cordially Invited, Witherspoon stars and Will Ferrel star as two parents who realize their children have booked the same wedding venue on the same day. In this modern day buddy comedy from Issa Rae, Keke Palmer and SZA (in her debut acting role) play two longtime best friends financially down on their luck.

But as in any year, there’s a wealth of promising new projects, from the indies to the IP fare and potential blockbusters. Ruth Ware’s bestselling novel arrives on screen, starring Keira Knightley as Lo, a travel journalist convinced she witnessed someone pushed overboard on a lavish cruise. Hannah Waddingham, Kaya Scodelario, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw round out the cast under Simon Stone’s direction. The psychological thriller leans heavily on isolation and tension, as no one else believes Lo’s account. Its claustrophobic vibe and eerie mysteries recall classic locked-room setups.

Cast members include Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Keanu Reeves as Ansari himself who will also serve as a producer on the film. The Boys star Jack Quaid is Nathan Caine, a hero who is immune to pain due to a rare genetic disorder. When his girlfriend (Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped during a robbery, Caine springs into action, battling new obstacles in this action-packed film. The Electric State follows Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) who, accompanied by a robot, journeys across the American West to find her younger brother. The film, helmed by the Russo brothers (Infinity War, Endgame), is set in the 90s in an America that is dealing from the aftermath of a war between humans and robots. Set in one of London’s tallest buildings, One Canada Square, Cleaner follows a window cleaner (Daisy Ridley) who is thrown into action when a company gala is hijacked by activists.
